Adding VAT
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, multiply by 1.2: 100.00 becomes 120.00, of which 20.00 is VAT.
Removing VAT
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, divide by 1.2: 120.00 is 100.00 net and 20.00 VAT. A common mistake is taking 20% off the gross price, which gives 96.00 and understates the VAT you owe.
Which UK rate applies?
Most goods and services are at the 20% standard rate. Some, such as domestic energy, are at 5%, and some, such as most food and children's clothes, are zero-rated. GOV.UK lists which rate applies to what.
