Margin and markup are not the same

Margin is profit as a share of the price you sell at. Markup is profit as a share of what it cost you. Buy at 60, sell at 100, and you make 40: that is a 40% margin but a 66.7% markup.

Mixing them up is how sellers end up earning less than they planned. Adding 40% to a cost of 60 gives 84, which is only a 28.6% margin.

Pricing for a target margin

Divide the cost by 1 minus the margin you want. For a 40% margin on a cost of 60, charge 60 ÷ 0.6 = 100.

Don't forget fees and VAT

Card fees and VAT come out of the price too. Count them as part of your cost, or check them with the card fee and VAT calculators.
