Count taxable sales only (most sales are, including zero-rated ones; exempt sales are not). The threshold has been £90,000 since 1 April 2024. Change it here if HMRC changes it.

When you must register

In the UK you must register for VAT if your taxable turnover for the last twelve months goes over the threshold, which has been ninety thousand pounds since the first of April twenty twenty four. You then have thirty days from the end of that month to register.

It is a rolling twelve months

The count is not your tax year. At the end of every month, add up the last twelve months of sales. If that total is over the threshold, you have gone over.

The thirty day rule

You must also register if you expect your turnover in the next thirty days alone to go over the threshold, for example from one very large order. Check HMRC's guidance for the full rules, and ask an accountant if you are close.

Registered already? Add or take VAT out of a price with the VAT calculator, and put your VAT number on every invoice.

This is a guide to the maths, not tax advice. Check the full rules on GOV.UK.
