The starting code is only an example. This checks the format and check digits; it can't tell you whether the code is in use or who it belongs to.
What a SEDOL is
A SEDOL is a 7-character code issued by the London Stock Exchange to identify securities, mainly those traded in the UK and Ireland. It uses digits and consonants only, never vowels, and the last character is a check digit. A UK ISIN is GB00, then the SEDOL, then one more check digit. The example here is BAE Systems' shares.
How the check works
Turn letters into numbers (B is 11, C is 12 and so on), multiply the first six values by 1, 3, 1, 7, 3 and 9, and add them up. The check digit is what brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. Passing doesn't prove the SEDOL is in use.
