What an IBAN checker can tell you
Every IBAN carries two check digits worked out from the rest of the number. If one character is mistyped or two are swapped, the sum no longer adds up, and the checker spots it before the money goes anywhere.
What it can't tell you
A correct IBAN can still belong to the wrong person. Before sending a large amount, confirm the account name with the person you're paying, ideally by phone rather than by replying to an email.
