What a SWIFT code is

A SWIFT code, also called a BIC, tells the banking network which bank and which office a payment is going to. It has eight or eleven characters: four for the bank, two for the country, two for the location and an optional three for the branch.

SWIFT code or IBAN?

The SWIFT code points to the bank; the IBAN points to the account at that bank. Many international payments need both, so check the IBAN too before you send.
