Basis point calculator
Convert basis points to percent and back, see what any number of bps comes to on an amount, and what a rate move of that size does to a rate. Free, no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser.
Use a minus sign for a cut, such as -25 bps. The starting numbers are only an example.
How to convert basis points
A basis point, written bp or bps, is one hundredth of one percent, or 0.01%. So 10 basis points is 0.1%, 50 basis points is 0.5% and 100 basis points is 1%.
Why not just say percent?
Saying a rate rose by 1% is ambiguous: it could mean from 4% to 5%, or from 4% to 4.04%. Saying it rose by 100 basis points is clear. That's why central banks and lenders use bps when announcing rate changes, and why card fees, bond yields and exchange rate markups are often quoted in basis points too.
