IFSC code checker

Check an Indian IFSC code's format before you send money: 11 characters, a four-letter bank code, a zero, and a six-character branch code. Catches the usual typing slips. Free, no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser.

The starting code is only an example of the format. An IFSC has no check digit, so this can't tell you whether a branch exists or which branch it is; confirm the code with the person you're paying or their bank.

How an IFSC is built

An IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character code, issued through the Reserve Bank of India, that identifies a specific bank branch in India. The first four letters are the bank, such as SBIN for State Bank of India. The fifth character is always 0, kept for future use. The last six characters are the branch.

Where it is used

IFSC codes are needed for India's domestic bank payment systems: NEFT, RTGS and IMPS. The code is printed on cheque books and passbooks and shown in online banking. International payments into India usually travel over SWIFT, so the sender's bank asks for a SWIFT code too, and many senders are also asked for the IFSC so the money reaches the right branch.
