The starting code is only an example. This checks the format and check digits; it can't tell you whether the code is in use or who it belongs to. To confirm that, use GLEIF's free LEI search.
What an LEI is
A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character code that identifies a company or other legal entity taking part in financial transactions, under the ISO 17442 standard. Firms that trade shares, bonds or derivatives in the UK, EU and many other places need one, and it has to be renewed every year. The example here is Apple Inc.'s LEI.
How the check works
The first four characters identify the organisation that issued the LEI, the next fourteen identify the entity, and the last two are check digits. Turn every letter into a number (A is 10, B is 11, up to Z at 35); the whole number must leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97. A single wrong character always fails. Passing doesn't prove the LEI is registered or current, so look it up on GLEIF.
