The starting code is only an example. This checks the format and check digits; it can't tell you whether the code is in use or who it belongs to.
What a CUSIP is
A CUSIP identifies a security issued in the US or Canada. The first six characters identify the issuer, the next two the particular issue, and the last is a check digit. A US ISIN is US, then the CUSIP, then one more check digit. The example here is Apple's shares.
How the check works
Letters count as numbers (A is 10 up to Z at 35; *, @ and # are 36, 37 and 38). Double every second value, add up the digits of every result, and the check digit is what brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. Passing doesn't prove the CUSIP is in use.
