The starting number is only an example. This checks the format and check digit; it can't tell you whose account it is, so confirm it with the person you're paying.

What a CLABE is

A CLABE (Clave Bancaria Estandarizada) is an 18-digit number that identifies a bank account in Mexico. The first three digits are the bank, the next three the city or area of the branch, the next eleven the account number, and the last digit is a check digit that catches typing mistakes. It is needed for transfers within Mexico, which mostly go through SPEI, and many payments into Mexico from abroad use it too.

How the check works

Multiply the first 17 digits by 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1 and so on, and keep only the last digit of each result. Add those up, take the last digit of the total, and subtract it from 10: that gives the check digit (a 10 counts as 0). A typo in one digit always breaks the check. Passing does not prove the account exists or belongs to the person you're paying.
