What is a CLABE? How Mexican bank transfers find the account
By SendPay Business · · 2 min read
A CLABE (Clave Bancaria Estandarizada) is an 18-digit number that identifies a bank account in Mexico. It is needed for bank transfers within Mexico and is also used for many payments into Mexico from abroad.
What the digits mean
- First three digits: the bank.
- Next three digits: the city or area of the branch.
- Next eleven digits: the account number.
- Last digit: a check digit that catches typing mistakes.
SPEI transfers
Within Mexico, most bank transfers go through SPEI, the electronic payment system run by the Banco de México. Payments to a CLABE usually arrive within minutes.
Paying from abroad
Many international transfer services pay straight into a CLABE. When paying through the SWIFT network, the sender's bank usually also asks for the Mexican bank's SWIFT code.
