The starting code is only an example. This checks the format and check digits; it can't tell you whether the code is in use or who it belongs to. To confirm that, use HMRC's free VAT number check.
What a UK VAT number looks like
A UK VAT registration number is GB followed by 9 digits, for example GB 123 4567 82. Some businesses with branches have 12 digits, the last 3 being the branch. Government departments use GD followed by 3 digits (000 to 499), and health authorities HA followed by 3 digits (500 to 999).
How the check works
Multiply the first seven digits by 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2, add them up, then add the last two digits as a number. For older numbers the total is a multiple of 97; for newer ones it becomes one when you add 55. This catches typos, but only HMRC can confirm the number is registered, which is what to check before you rely on it.
