Card rewards cost calculator
Planning a card with cashback? See what the rewards would cost each month and year, how much interchange the same spending brings in, and how big the gap is. Free, no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser.
Interchange here is the gross fee on the spending, before any split with the issuer or other partners, which depends on your own agreements. Business cards and cards used abroad can carry different rates.
Each cardholder would earn about £36 cashback a year.
Who pays for card rewards
Card rewards such as cashback or points look free to the cardholder, but someone pays for them. Most of the money comes from the interchange fee a shop's payment provider pays the card issuer each time a card is used, plus whatever the card provider chooses to fund from its own margin.
Why UK and EU rewards are smaller
In the UK and the EU, interchange on most consumer cards is capped at 0.2% for debit and 0.3% for credit. That leaves little room to fund rewards. Some providers fund extra cashback through partner deals with shops, through subscription plans, or treat it as a marketing cost to win new customers.
