What the RSI measures
The Relative Strength Index compares the size of recent up moves with recent down moves and puts the result on a scale from 0 to 100. It was created by J. Welles Wilder, who used 14 periods. A reading near 100 means the rises have far outweighed the falls; near 0, the opposite.
Overbought and oversold
Many traders read an RSI above 70 as overbought and below 30 as oversold, meaning the move may be stretched. In a strong trend the RSI can stay above 70 or below 30 for a long time, so it is usually read alongside the trend and other analysis rather than on its own.
