What correlation tells you
Correlation measures how closely two markets move together, on a scale from -1 to +1. Close to +1 means they usually rise and fall together, close to -1 means one tends to rise when the other falls, and near 0 means there is little link. EUR/USD and GBP/USD, for example, often move in the same direction because both are priced against the US dollar.
Why traders check it
Holding two positions in strongly correlated markets can double the same risk without meaning to, while a negative correlation can offset it. Correlations change over time, so traders recheck them over different periods rather than relying on one number.
