MACD is above zero and below its signal line.
What MACD shows
MACD, short for Moving Average Convergence Divergence, was created by Gerald Appel. It takes a fast exponential moving average (usually 12 periods) and subtracts a slow one (usually 26). When the MACD line is above zero, the short-term average is above the long-term one, which traders read as upward momentum.
Signal line and histogram
The signal line is a 9-period average of the MACD line itself, and the histogram is the gap between the two. Traders watch for the MACD line crossing above or below its signal line, and for the histogram shrinking as a sign momentum is fading. Like all indicators built on past prices, it lags and gives false signals in choppy markets.
