10 prices read. The EMA starts from the first full SMA, so it settles down after a few more prices. This is a calculator, not advice.
Simple and exponential moving averages
A moving average smooths out a price chart. The simple moving average (SMA) is the plain average of the last few closing prices, say the last 20 days. The exponential moving average (EMA) gives more weight to recent prices, so it reacts faster when the market turns.
How traders use them
Traders often read price above a moving average as an uptrend and below it as a downtrend, and watch for a short average crossing a long one, such as the 50-day crossing the 200-day. Because they are built from past prices, moving averages always lag, so they confirm trends rather than predict them.
