What a pivot point is
A pivot point is a price level worked out from the previous day's (or week's) high, low and close. Traders watch it as a rough line between a bullish and bearish mood for the next session: price above the pivot is read as strength, below it as weakness. The levels above are called resistance, the ones below support.
How to use the levels
Pivot levels are reference points, not predictions. Many traders look for price to slow down or turn near them, and some place stop losses just beyond a level. They work best alongside other analysis, and markets can move straight through every level on a busy day.
The formulas
Pivot = (high + low + close) / 3. R1 = 2 × pivot − low, S1 = 2 × pivot − high. R2 = pivot + (high − low), S2 = pivot − (high − low). R3 = high + 2 × (pivot − low), S3 = low − 2 × (high − pivot).
