What an emergency fund is for

An emergency fund is money set aside for the unexpected: losing work, a broken boiler, a car repair. Having it means you don't have to borrow on a card or overdraft when something goes wrong. Many people aim for three to six months of essential costs, but the right amount depends on how steady your income is.

Building it up

Count only the essentials: rent or mortgage, bills, food, transport and debt payments. Then save a fixed amount each month, ideally moved automatically on payday into a separate pot so it isn't spent by accident. Keep it somewhere you can reach quickly rather than locked away.
