What's in the basket

Special drawing rights, or SDRs, are an international reserve asset created by the International Monetary Fund in 1969. One SDR is made up of set amounts of five currencies: the US dollar, the euro, the Chinese renminbi (added in 2016), the Japanese yen and the British pound.

How its value is set

The value of one SDR is worked out daily from the exchange rates of those five currencies. Because the amounts are fixed, a currency that strengthens makes up a bigger share of the SDR's value. The IMF reviews the basket, usually every five years.
