Chargeback cost calculator
See what a disputed card payment really costs your business, and compare refunding, accepting the chargeback and fighting it with evidence. Free, no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser.
The starting figures are only an example; use your provider's chargeback fee and your own estimate of the chance of winning, which depends on the reason code and your evidence. Some providers refund the fee if you win; this assumes they don't. Later stages such as arbitration carry extra fees not counted here. This is a calculator, not advice.
Refund or chargeback
A refund is money a business chooses to give back. A chargeback is money the customer's card issuer takes back after the customer disputes a payment. A refund usually costs only the money returned. A chargeback often adds a fee, takes time to answer, and too many of them can put a business's ability to take cards at risk.
Fighting a chargeback
Representment is the process of sending evidence back through the card network to show the charge was valid and ask for the money back. Useful evidence includes proof of delivery or service, signed terms, the customer's messages and records that 3D Secure was used. Later stages carry extra fees, so merchants weigh the amount at stake first.
