What a pip is

A pip is the standard small step in an exchange rate: the fourth decimal place for most pairs (0.0001), and the second (0.01) for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, it has moved one pip.

Why the pip value changes

A pip is worth a fixed amount of the second currency in the pair, the quote currency. One standard lot is 100,000 units of the first currency, so one pip on EUR/USD is worth 10 US dollars. If your account is in another currency, that amount is converted at today's rate, so the pip value in your currency moves as rates move.
