What the spread is

Every currency price has two sides: the bid, the price you can sell at, and the ask, the price you can buy at. The gap between them is the spread. If you bought and sold straight away at an unchanged price, the spread is what you would lose, so it is a cost on every trade.

Why the spread changes

Spreads are usually tightest on the most traded pairs, such as EUR/USD, and during busy market hours. They tend to widen on less traded pairs, overnight, and around big news. A spread that looks small in pips adds up quickly over many trades and larger sizes.
