Foreign transaction fee calculator
See what your card really charges when you pay in another currency, abroad or online: the fee in your own money, the total cost, and how much of every payment goes on fees. Free, no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser.
Use the fees your card provider shows for your card; the starting figures are only an example. The exchange rate your card uses can differ from the one you see online.
Where the cost comes from
A foreign transaction fee is an extra charge some card providers add when you pay in a currency other than your card's own. On top of the exchange rate used to turn the foreign amount into your own currency, the provider adds a percentage, and sometimes a fixed fee per payment or per cash withdrawal as well. On many UK high street cards it is around 3% of each payment.
How to pay less
Check your card's fees before you travel; some cards charge no foreign transaction fee. The fee applies online too, when a website charges in another currency. When a shop or cash machine abroad offers to charge you in your own currency, choose the local currency instead: that offer, called dynamic currency conversion, usually comes with a worse rate.
