How gas fees are worked out
Every action on Ethereum uses a set amount of gas, and you pay a price per unit of gas, quoted in gwei. One gwei is 0.000000001 ETH. The fee is gas used times gas price: a plain transfer uses 21,000 gas, so at 20 gwei it costs 0.00042 ETH.
Why fees go up and down
The gas price rises when the network is busy and falls when it is quiet, so the same action can cost very different amounts at different times. Token transfers, swaps and NFT mints use more gas than a plain transfer, and the exact amount depends on the contract.
