Ether, gwei and wei
Ether (ETH) is the currency of the Ethereum network. Like pounds and pence, it splits into smaller units: one ether is a billion gwei, and one gwei is a billion wei, so one ether is a billion billion wei. Wallets and smart contracts count everything in wei behind the scenes.
Why gas prices are in gwei
Every transaction or contract action on Ethereum costs a fee called gas, paid in ether. Because the amounts are tiny, gas prices are usually quoted in gwei. Fees rise when the network is busy, so check the fee shown before you confirm a transaction.
