How the index is built
The US Dollar Index compares the dollar with six currencies: the euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. Each exchange rate is raised to a fixed weight and multiplied together with a constant, so the index started at 100 in March 1973. The euro carries about 58% of the weight, so EUR/USD moves the index most.
Reading the result
Above 100 means the dollar is stronger against the basket than in 1973; below 100 means weaker. Because the weights are fixed, the formula can rebuild the index from the six rates. Where the dollar is quoted second, as in EUR/USD and GBP/USD, the weight is negative: a higher EUR/USD means a weaker dollar.
