What a cross rate is
A cross rate is the exchange rate between two currencies worked out through a third, usually the US dollar. If 1 dollar buys 0.79 pounds and 152 yen, then 1 pound buys 152 ÷ 0.79, about 192.4 yen. Banks and brokers price many pairs this way.
Why your rate may differ
The cross rate from two mid-market rates is a fair middle price. A bank or money transfer service usually adds a markup or a spread on top, so the rate you are offered can be lower. Comparing it with the cross rate shows what that markup costs.
