The two costs in every transfer
The first is the fee you see. The second is hidden in the exchange rate: most providers give you a rate a little worse than the real mid-market rate, the one you see on Google or XE, and keep the difference. On a big transfer, that gap often costs more than the fee.
How to compare providers properly
Ignore "zero fee" and "best rate" claims and look at one number: how much arrives on the other side for the same amount sent. Put each provider's fee and rate into this calculator, and the one with the smallest total cost is the cheapest, whatever its adverts say.
How the hidden cost is worked out
At the real rate, your amount would buy amount × mid-market rate. At the rate you're given it buys amount × your rate. The difference, turned back into your own currency, is what the rate costs you. Add the fee and you have the true cost.
