What credit utilisation is

Credit utilisation is how much of your available credit you are using: your card and credit line balances divided by their limits. A £1,200 balance on a £3,000 limit is 40%. Lenders and credit reference agencies look at it for each card and across all of them together.

Why it matters

Using a large share of your limits can suggest you rely heavily on credit, so a lower utilisation generally looks better to lenders. Paying balances down, or paying before the statement date so a lower balance is reported, both bring it down. Each agency scores differently, so there is no single magic number.
