What is a satoshi? Bitcoin's smallest unit, explained
By SendPay Business · · 2 min read
A satoshi, often shortened to sat, is the smallest unit of bitcoin. One bitcoin is made up of 100 million satoshis, so one satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC. It is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of bitcoin.
Why sats are useful
With one bitcoin worth a large amount of money, most everyday amounts are tiny fractions of a coin. Talking in sats is easier: 25,000 sats is simpler to read than 0.00025 BTC. Network fees are often quoted in sats too.
Quick conversions
- 1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats.
- 0.01 BTC = 1,000,000 sats.
- 0.001 BTC = 100,000 sats.
- 1 sat = 0.00000001 BTC.
Buying a fraction of a bitcoin
You don't have to buy a whole bitcoin. Most exchanges let you buy a small amount in pounds, euros or dollars, and you receive the matching number of sats. Crypto prices can fall as well as rise, so only use money you can afford to lose.
