What is a QR code payment? How scan-to-pay works

A QR code payment lets someone pay by scanning a square barcode with their phone. The code holds the details needed to pay, so the payer does not have to type an account number or a link.

How scan-to-pay works

  1. The seller shows a QR code on a screen, a sticker or an invoice.
  2. The payer scans it with their banking or payment app, or their phone camera.
  3. The app fills in who to pay and, sometimes, how much.
  4. The payer confirms, and the money is sent.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

A static QR code always holds the same details, such as a shop's account, so the payer types the amount. A dynamic QR code is created for one payment and includes the amount, which reduces mistakes and makes it easier to match the payment to an order.

Where QR payments are popular

QR payments are everyday in many countries, including China through apps such as Alipay and WeChat Pay, India through UPI, and Brazil through Pix.

QR code scams

Fraudsters sometimes stick fake QR codes over real ones, for example on parking meters, to send people to a fake payment page. Check the website address and the name of who you are paying before you confirm.
