What are round-ups? How banking apps save your spare change

Round-ups are a savings feature in many banking apps. Each time you pay by card, the app rounds the payment up to the nearest pound and moves the difference, your spare change, into savings.

A simple example

You buy a coffee for £2.60. The app rounds it up to £3.00 and moves 40p into your savings. Spread over many small card payments a month, the spare change can add up to a noticeable sum without you having to decide to save each time.

How it usually works

  1. You switch round-ups on in the app and choose where the spare change goes.
  2. Each card payment is rounded up to the next whole pound.
  3. The spare change is moved, either straight away or in one batch each day or week.
  4. Some apps let you multiply the round-up, for example two or three times, to save faster.

Things to think about

Round-ups come out of your everyday balance, so keep an eye on it if money is tight. Check where the savings go, whether they earn interest, and how easily you can take them back out.
