How do cash machines work? What happens when you take out cash

A cash machine, or ATM, lets you take cash out of your account without going into a bank. Behind the screen, it has to check your card, your PIN and your balance with your card provider in a few seconds.

What happens in those few seconds

  1. You insert or tap your card, and the machine reads the chip.
  2. You type your PIN and the amount you want.
  3. The machine sends the request through a network to your card provider.
  4. Your provider checks the PIN and your balance, then approves or declines.
  5. The machine counts out the notes, and the amount is taken from your account.

Networks and fees

In the UK, most cash machines are connected through the LINK network, so almost any card works in almost any machine. Most machines are free to use, but some charge a fee; the machine must tell you on screen before you go ahead, so you can cancel. Your own card provider may also charge for withdrawals, especially abroad.

Staying safe

Cover the keypad as you type your PIN, check for anything fitted to the card slot, and don't accept help from strangers. If the machine keeps your card, call your card provider straight away from where you are.
