Why money today is worth more

£1,000 today is worth more than £1,000 in five years, because money you have now can earn interest in the meantime, and prices tend to rise. That idea is called the time value of money, and it is behind savings, loans, bond prices and how businesses judge investments.

Present and future value

Future value is what money today grows to at a given rate: £1,000 at 5% a year is about £1,276 after five years. Present value works backwards: £1,276 due in five years is worth about £1,000 today at 5%. The rate used to work backwards is called the discount rate.
