Maker vs taker fees: how crypto exchanges charge for trades
By SendPay Business · · 2 min read
Many crypto exchanges charge two different trading fees. A taker fee applies when your order fills straight away against orders already waiting. A maker fee applies when your order waits on the order book until someone else fills it.
Makers and takers
A maker adds an order to the book, such as an offer to buy at a price below today's. A taker removes liquidity by accepting a price that is already on offer. Exchanges often charge makers less because waiting orders make the market deeper for everyone.
A worked example
On an exchange charging 0.1% to makers and 0.2% to takers, a £1,000 trade costs £1 as a maker and £2 as a taker. That difference adds up quickly for people who trade often.
Simple buy and sell apps
Many consumer crypto apps don't show an order book at all. Instead they quote one price with a fee or spread built in, which is easier for beginners to understand.
