What is treasury management? How businesses manage their cash

Treasury management is how a business looks after its cash: making sure it has enough money in the right place and currency to pay its bills, while keeping risks such as exchange rate swings under control.

What treasury covers

It usually covers cash flow forecasting, deciding which accounts hold how much, handling different currencies, managing borrowing and spare cash, and controlling who can move money.

Cash flow forecasting

  1. List the money you expect to come in each week or month.
  2. List the bills, wages and other payments going out.
  3. Spot the weeks where more goes out than comes in.
  4. Plan ahead for those gaps, for example by chasing invoices earlier.

Managing currency risk

A business that is paid in one currency and pays suppliers in another is exposed to exchange rate changes. Holding balances in the currencies you spend, and converting at planned times, can reduce surprises.
