What is the Direct Debit Guarantee? How to get money back from a wrong Direct Debit

The Direct Debit Guarantee is a promise that comes with every Direct Debit in the UK. If money is taken in error, by you, your bank or the company collecting, your bank must refund it straight away.

What it promisesHow to claimFor businesses collecting

What it promises

  1. The company must tell you in advance if the amount or date of a payment changes.
  2. If an error is made, you get a full and immediate refund from your bank.
  3. You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by contacting your bank.

How to claim

Contact your bank, usually through its app or by phone, and say which payment was wrong. The bank refunds you and then recovers the money from the company, which can't refuse the claim with the bank but can follow up with you if it disagrees.

For businesses collecting

Businesses that collect by Direct Debit, directly or through a provider, must follow the scheme rules, including sending advance notice of payments. Refund claims under the Guarantee are taken back from them.
