What is Bitcoin dominance? Bitcoin's share of the crypto market

Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market value as a share of the whole crypto market. If all crypto together is worth $2 trillion and Bitcoin is worth $1 trillion, Bitcoin dominance is 50%.

How it is worked out

Data sites add up the market value of every coin they track and divide Bitcoin's market value by the total. Because each site tracks a different list of coins, their dominance figures can differ slightly.

Why it moves

  1. Money moving from Bitcoin into other coins pushes dominance down.
  2. In sell-offs, holders often move into Bitcoin or stablecoins, which can push it up.
  3. New coins launching add to the total and can nudge it down.
  4. Stablecoins count in the total, so their growth also lowers dominance.

What people read into it

Some traders treat falling dominance as a sign of an "altcoin season", when smaller coins outperform. It is a rough gauge of mood, not a forecast, and crypto prices can fall sharply whatever it shows.
